Do You Know… About Breastfeeding? Interview
Of all topics debated by young mothers over the years, breastfeeding remains as one of the most debated topics amongst young mothers today. How much do you know about breastfeeding? Let’s get some insights from one of our mommies Mrs J, about her experience with breastfeeding. J
Q: How long did you breastfeed your child for? Why did you stop breastfeeding?
I breastfed my child for 19 months. I stopped breastfeeding due to my child’s teething and excessive latching that hurt me and did not heal for more than a month.
Q: What are some benefits breastfeeding brought about for you?
Some really wonderful benefits breastfeeding brought about for me were:
- – Bonding with my child.
- – Convenience when traveling out with my child – I do not have to look for hot water to make formula milk for my child.
- – I do not need to make milk in the middle of the night when my child is crying due to hunger.
- – Slimming down even when I was still eating a lot.
Q: What are some disadvantages breastfeeding brought about for you?
Some disadvantages breastfeeding brought about for me were:
- – I didn’t get to rest well at night as I had to wake up in the middle of my night to breastfeed my child.
- – It became painful to breastfeed t when my child was teething or constantly latching when he is not feeling well.
Q: Why did you choose to breastfeed your child?
I choose to breastfeed my child because breastmilk provides a lot of nutrients required for healthy growth and development of my baby. Furthermore, I get to save cost on formula milk (which can get really expensive nowadays). It is also extremely convenient to breastfeed especially when I’m out with my child since I do not need to bring along the milk bottles, milk powder and hot water flask.
Q: What do you feel about the price hike for formula milk?
It is ridiculously expensive!
Q: How do you breastfeed in public?
In public, I’ll wear tops that are loose fit for easy access to feed my child. For modesty purposes, I use a nursing cloth/jacket/towel to cover myself when I breastfeed in public.
Sometimes, I’ll breastfeed in the nursing rooms available in shopping malls because in nursing rooms, I can rest my back against the wall so it’s not so straining for my back. Also, in nursing rooms, I can breastfeed my child comfortably without nursing cloth.
On some days when I take my child out in a baby carrier, I’ll just breastfeed my child directly since the carrier and my child will be covering my chest as I feed him.
Q: Did you experience any problem with breastfeeding? If so, please describe the problem and also, how did you overcome the problem?
When I’m not around or not free, no one else is able to take over my place to comfort and feed my child when he is hungry. I think this is a very real concern most new mothers have. Hence, I would pump the breastmilk out for storage purposes. With this, in the event I’m not around or not free, my family members can still help to comfort and feed my child.
Also, my child tends to latch on me every now and then, especially when we are in the train/cab/car. Sometimes, it is difficult to make my child unlatch. He also tends to bite when he was teething.
Q: Any additional tips with regards to breastfeeding for fellow mummies?
Some tips from me:
- – Don’t overstress yourself when it comes to milk supply.
- – Enjoy the breastfeeding moments while it last.
- – Eat everything in moderation because this will help the child when they are ready for solids.
